About Isekai Eye

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you suddenly found yourself in another world? What would you do to survive? Would you be a hero, a villain or a simple merchant? What if you have a magical eye watching these worlds and the people who live in them?

Isekai Eye is dedicated to collecting and bringing you stories about various exciting isekai adventures from manga and anime. I also provide personal thoughts and experiences about how such stories relate to your lives.

The number of isekai stories has grown rapidly in China, Japan, and Korea during the 2010’s, and it continues to grow, creating a unique, separate subgenre of fiction on its own. While there has been mention about isekai stories here and there on various blogs and websites, none have taken an in-depth look into the subgenre as a whole. For this reason, I have decided to help bring more awareness to the isekai stories by starting this blog.

I prefer not to think of this blog as a place for review. While I have personal preferences and biases like everyone else, I prefer to keep an open mind for the countless writers who have overcome fears and worked hard to put their stories into print and media. No, what I am doing is giving you an “eye” into the world of isekai and letting you decide what appeals to you.

Since all fiction is basically about being in another world apart from our own, I will also occasionally post articles about manga and anime that are not necessarily classified as isekai, but are still windows to other thrilling worlds! If you know any isekai stories that you enjoy, please feel free to let me know and I will take a look as soon as I can. Please note that this is a personal blog.

What is isekai?

Isekai (異世界 “different world”) is a Japanese fiction subgenre of light novels, web novels, manga and anime. In Korea, isekai is known as isegye (이세계 “this world”).

An isekai story usually begins with a person from modern-day Earth being transported to a parallel universe, usually a fantasy world. The main character can arrive through either physical transportation or reincarnation, which involves them dying on their original world and being reborn in the new universe. After arriving, the main character has to gradually learn about and adapt to life on the new world, while overcoming any challenges that come their way.

With the growing number of isekai stories, many clichés are developing as well, such as the main character being a chosen one of some sort, having a harem or having a unique story-breaker power. Newer stories often try to put their own unique spins to these clichés, which we will examine as they come out.
